Buying Guide

Before you buy an acoustic guitar you have several things that you need to consider. There's a lot of choice in the marketplace and buying decisions that you have to look at before you buy your acoustic guitar. Here are a few of the things that you need to address and take under consideration before you make that acoustic guitar purchase.

Pickups

Mini acoustic guitars today and now ship with pickups. You don't have to buy an acoustic guitar with a pick up if you don't want one, but it just makes it easier to amplifier your acoustic guitar and use it with an acoustic amplifier. Most pickups today are found under the guitar bridge and are called Piezo pickups. These pickups are very small and you don't see them because they are located under the saddle of the guitar. This pickup amplifies the sound of your strings so you can hear it through your acoustic guitar amplifier. The strap button located on the bottom of your acoustic guitar is the input jack for this pickup. There are many different models of guitars that you can get with this sort of pick up and it's usually the option to that most people go for.

Inside the guitar, you'll usually find a preamp or other sort of electronics that is used to control the pickup. Most of these preamps will have a 9-volt battery as the power supply which you can change periodically to keep the pickup functioning. Some acoustic guitars will have the electronics just inside of the sound hole, on the side of the guitar, or near the heel of the guitar. these Electronics will usually have volume, tone, and other controls. Some acoustic guitars will also come with built-in tuners or other electronics depending upon the make and model.

There are other pickups you can get for your acoustic guitar but these usually just sit inside of the sound hole and then you will have a regular guitar cable which you can then plug into your amplifier to amplify your acoustic guitar. These pickups aren't as popular as they once were because there are so many choices in regard to the saddle pickups which are easier to operate and don't have the cumbersome guitar cables that the sound hole pickups tend to have. Another way to amplify your acoustic guitar if it doesn't have a pickup is to simply put the microphone up to the guitar and amplifier to the speaker that way.

As you can see there are several different ways that you can amplify your acoustic guitar. You don't have to amplify it if you don't want to, but this is an option especially if you're going to play acoustic guitar on stage or in a performance setting as it allows people to hear the acoustic guitar more clearly when it is amplified.

Acoustic Guitar Types

Next, we need to look at various guitar types to determine what the best guitar type is going to be for your needs. There's several different shapes and styles of acoustic guitars that are on the market which you need to be aware of.

Dreadnaught

The Dreadnought acoustic guitar is a full-sized acoustic guitar. These guitars don’t have cutaways and give you access to a limit to the number of frets. The advantage of a Dreadnought style guitar is that you get a great booming sound out of the guitar and they are one of the most common types of acoustic guitar on the market. The downside is that it's quite difficult to play any of the frets past the 12th one or so this is a disadvantage to some individuals who may want to play more complicated acoustic guitar lines or solo acoustic guitar because they're limited as to the number of frets that you can access. You will find a wide range of Dreadnought style guitars on the market to choose from.

Cutaway

The Cutaway acoustic guitar teachers a portion of the body that has been removed. this cutaway portion allows you to access more of the Frets on the acoustic guitar and it can be an ideal option for players that want to play more advanced styles and need to access the guitar past the 12th fret. Many of these cutaway guitars are quite lightweight and easy to play. A cutaway guitar also tends to come with electronics built into the guitar so you can easily plug this instrument into an acoustic amplifier and begin to play. There are many different styles of cutaway guitars that you can choose from on the current market.

12-String

Another option when it comes to acoustic guitars is a 12-string acoustic guitar. This type of guitar can either be a Dreadnought style or a cutaway style but instead of only offering you six strange, it offers you 12 strings. The 12 string guitar can have a very full and rich sound and it can be an ideal choice for many individuals that want different sounds out of their acoustic guitar. Due to the extra strings, the 12-string will use it cost a lot more than a regular acoustic guitar and they also take a little more effort to tune properly.

Nylon String

Another type of acoustic guitar uses a nylon string. This type of acoustic guitar is usually used in classical style guitar, Latin guitar, and similar styles. One advantage to the nylon string guitar is that it can be easier to play for beginners especially smaller children as the strings aren't is hard on your fingers as they are with regular steel strings that you find on regular acoustic guitars.

Acoustic Electric

The acoustic-electric is simply an acoustic guitar that has a built-in pick up already. There are many different styles of acoustic-electric guitars on the market. Most of these guitars will also have a built-in equalizer, preamp, or another sort of electronics such as a tuner. These guitars usually require a 9-volt battery to supply the preamp and other electronics with power. The pickups for these sorts of guitars are usually found underneath the saddle bone of the acoustic guitar.

Small Sized

You will also find a lot of acoustic guitars that are smaller shaped than regular acoustic guitars. These smaller sized acoustic guitars are perfect for children or players that have a smaller hand reach. These guitars are ideal to learn on and they are much smaller than the standard dreadnought style guitar. You'll find that most manufacturers will offer a smaller size guitar which can be the perfect guitar for the first time player.

Things You Need to Consider

Strings

One of the things you need to consider with an acoustic guitar is the type of strings that you use. It's always recommended that beginners go for a lighter gauge of an acoustic guitar string when they are first starting out. Acoustic guitar strings are by their nature heavier than regular electric guitar strings so they require a more finger pressure to get the notes to sound out. If you use heavy acoustic guitar strings at first your fingers are going to hurt quite a bit as you learn on the acoustic guitar. By using a lighter gauge of an acoustic guitar string, your fingers won't hurt as much and you'll be able to learn at a faster rate. There are various types of acoustic guitar strings and acoustic guitar manufacturers so you have to try a few brands out first to determine what the best type of string for your needs is going to be.

One type of acoustic guitar strings that you might want to try if you are a beginner is a coated acoustic guitar string. These coated acoustic guitar strings are much easier to play than regular acoustic guitar strings and they don't wear out as often so you save money on acoustic guitar string purchases. these strings have a smooth finish and they allow your fingers to slide up and down the guitar neck with ease. They don't corrode or rust like regular acoustic guitar strings and they don't need to be changed very often. The downside to coated guitar strings as they tend to cost quite a bit more than the regular strings do, but this added cost is well worth the benefit that coated strings can provide for you as a new guitar player.

In general, a light or an extra light gauge of an acoustic guitar string is ideal for beginners to the instrument. As you advance on acoustic guitar, you might want to try a medium guitar string which will give you a fuller sound and more tone but be a bit harder to play. As you get better on a guitar this won't be much of an issue but it will be an issue if you're just a beginner so later strings are the better option. If you don't use coated strings, make sure you replace your acoustic guitar strings at least once a month as old acoustic guitar strings lose their tone, get rusty, and can transport more dust and debris onto your guitar fretboard which may cause damage to it.

Picks

There are several different types of pics that you can get for an acoustic guitar. Most acoustic guitar players will go with regular pics while some that are into fingerstyle guitar or more advanced guitar Styles like delta blues for example, may decide to use finger picks which are ideal for more advanced styles. When you play acoustic guitar at the ideal pick gauge is going to be a medium gauge guitar pick as you can both strong with this type of guitar pick as well as play lead lines on your acoustic guitar. When it comes to guitar picks you really have to experiment quite a bit to find a guitar pick that works to suit your individual needs. Try several different guitar pick brands and different guitar pick gauges to find the best one that works for you. It's also a good idea to have several guitar picks on hand because you will tend to lose guitar picks quite often when you play guitar. 4 most players the best option is to start with a simple medium guitar pick and then go from there.

Amplifiers

Many players will want to amplify their acoustic guitar and this is where an acoustic guitar amplifier comes in. You must realize that it's not a good idea to plug your acoustic guitar into a regular electric guitar amplifier because electric guitar amplifier is not suited for the acoustic guitar and you may ruin your electric guitar amplifier if you use an acoustic instrument through that sort of amplifier. You'll have to spend a little bit extra money and get a proper acoustic guitar amplifier.

There are many different brands and models of acoustic guitar amplifiers. Many people will choose tube amplifiers because this offers you a richer and fuller sound when compared to other amplifiers. You will also find a lot of solid-state amplifiers on the market that are just as good as regular tube amplifiers. There are also other amplifiers which are called amp modelers which model some of the classic amplifiers from the past. In general, you can expect to spend between 300 to $600 for a decent acoustic amplifier and the price will go up from there if you want something with more features.

Many acoustic amplifiers will also come with built-in effects such as chorus, delay, flanger, reverb, and other effects that you can use with your acoustic guitar. You will have to experiment a lot with acoustic amplifiers to find one that works for your needs and gives you the sounds that you want.

Setup and Maintenance

When you own an acoustic guitar, there are several things you can do to set up your acoustic guitar for easier playing and to maintain your guitar so it lasts you a long time.

Guitar Neck Adjustment

One of the first things you need to consider with your acoustic guitar is that the neck is fairly straight. You can make this adjustment via the truss rod which is inside of your acoustic guitar on most major brands. You only want to turn this truss rod a slight amount with the included Allen wrench that usually comes with your acoustic guitar. If your acoustic guitar already has a straight neck, you really don't have to adjust the truss rod by that much or even at all. Never adjust the truss rod by more than 1/4 turn at a time because you may warp your guitar neck. To determine the straightness of your acoustic guitar put the body of the acoustic guitar on the floor or on a table and hold the headstock in your hand. You want to look down the side of the acoustic guitar and press your finger down at the 12th fret. This will give you the overall straightness of the acoustic guitar neck. Most acoustic guitars that shipped from the warehouse are going to have a fairly straight neck. If you notice a lot of bowling or warping in your guitar neck, make sure you take it to a guitar technician to have this adjusted properly Unless you know how to do this yourself.

Action

The action on the acoustic guitar or how far the strings are off the fretboard is a lot harder to adjust on an acoustic guitar than an electric guitar and its best left to a professional. You can sometimes adjust this action by loosening or tightening a truss rod buy a small degree. One adjustment that can be done to lower or raise the action is to remove some of the material off of the bridge saddle. this isn't a good idea to do on your own as you may permanently damage of the saddle. This adjustment should be left to a professional that can adjust your saddle and just the right way. If the strings tend to be too low then a small piece of material called a shim can be put under the bridge saddle to raise it up a slight degree so you have a better action on your acoustic guitar. In general, the action on an acoustic guitar is quite a lot higher than a regular electric guitar simply because of the nature of an acoustic guitar.

Humidity

Acoustic guitars are made out of wood and it can suffer from issues with humidity. When there is humidity in the air the wood of the acoustic guitar can expand and contract depending upon the weather conditions. It's a good idea to put a humidifier in your electric guitar case or gig bag as this can help regulate the amount of humidity that the acoustic guitar is exposed to. If an acoustic guitar is exposed to a lot of humidity, for example, the action on the strings may raise up or the neck may warp slightly because there's too much moisture in the air and the wood is being exposed to this excess moisture. The humidifier will help to regulate the temperature and keep your guitar in a better playing shape. In some cases, acoustic guitars need to be adjusted during different periods of the Year depending upon the temperature and the relative humidity in the air. By using a humidifier, you can reduce the chances that your guitar is going to suffer exposure from humidity. If you own an expensive acoustic guitar, it's a very good idea to have a humidifier inside your case to protect your investment.

Cleaning

Acoustic guitars, in general, don't require a whole lot of cleaning. A small bit of guitar polish and a guitar polishing cloth is usually all that's needed to clean the finish on an acoustic guitar or you can just rub the polishing cloth across the finish to clean it. The fretboard of an acoustic guitar may accumulate a lot of dust and debris from sweat which transfers to the fretboard.  This can usually be cleaned off without much trouble. If you don't know how to do this, you can always have a guitar technician clean the fretboard for you. the fretboard usually only needs to be cleaned about once or twice per year depending upon how dirty it is. Once the fretboard is cleaned, it can be seasoned with a small amount of oil.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How to String an Acoustic Guitar?

Stringing an acoustic guitar is actually quite simple. Located on the bridge of the acoustic guitar bridge pins. You can easily remove these with a peg winder device that allows you to take the bridge pins out of the bridge without damaging the bridge itself. Before you do this you want to slacken the strings via the tuning pegs at the top of the headstock until there is no attention whatsoever. You then want to remove the string from the tuning peg and then lift the string out of the bridge via the tuning peg. Once the string has been removed, put a new string into the bridge and press it down into the bridge with the tuning peg. Once this is done you can move the string up to the tuning peg, wrap it around the tuning peg a couple of times and put it to the small hole there to secure the string. The next thing that you do is simply wind up the tuning peg until the string is enough tension and then cut off the excess string. once you've done this, you simply tune the string up to pitch using either your year or a guitar tuner.  Most acoustic guitars are strung in this matter unless they have a different type of bridge.
